Final Product

Editing process

I used the magic wand tool to go around the band members so that I could put them on my poster, i then feather the image slightly in case of harsh edges around the image,

I used a font called scribble scratch for the title and other information, the splattered paint background and i also applied a shadow to the album to make sure it stood out on the advert.

I used the same font again for the information but made it bigger to make it much more eye catching.

I also used the same font for the information of websites and added any necessary logo's or recording logo's on the mag advert.

Ideas and feedback

People liked the idea of the band holding a sign since it will be instantly recognizable due to the connection with the music video.  They didn't like the idea of a large photo of the album.

The idea of tour dates was a good idea but I decided not to use it in the end as it may make the advertisement look a little too cluttered so may attract less of the target audience.

They likes the idea of the small album cover, the ratings and the website links but not the idea of the band with instruments as it may not relate to the video as much as a sign would.

Student Magazine Analysis

The layout of the poster doesnt work, it looks as if the logo's have been randomly placed and not thought about at all, the font's dont work because they are all different and poorly chosen, they may have gone with the orange theme which may have worked if they have placed the logo's properly but because of this it doesn't work at all. The main font works but because of the white background they've attempted to use it makes it look unprofessionally made, the image is also stretched which doesn't look particularly good and you cannot tell what they are doing in the image because of the effects used unlike with the video or album cover you can clearly see what is going on. I like the orange colour scheme but other than that i feel this is a poorly created piece that could have had potential but did not.

Analysis of Magazine Advertisment

The CD advertisment is for King Of Leon's only by the night released in 2008, the distorted image is eye catching and works along side the indie/rock genre because of this it entices the fans of the band to buy the cd and also gives it an iconic image to remember. The green of the image also works along side the red and white text allowing it to stand out and work along side the marketing of the album since it is eyecatching. the layout if good perhaps a little confusing because of the image's distortion. The ad contains vital information about where you can purchase the cd and some of the more famously known tracks which the band have released as singles. I like this advert because it is different and rememberable. but i dont like the blue and the yellow text since it doesnt work with the rest of the colour scheme .

Brand Identity

A brand is the identity of a specific product, service, or business . A brand can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. The brand shows the identity of certain artists, like Rihanna had bright red hair which was a statement for her brand.

This also helps with her album "Loud" which reflects her personality as being an out there artist. This also allows people to recognize the artist also, because her red hair allowed people to use this as a fashion statement.

This also complies with artist such as Slash who has the top hat, or Michael Jackson with the white glove.
Slash is instantly recognized because of the big hair, leather jacket and hat, which is his own identity.

Again Michael Jackson's white glove is an identity of his own which because of being an iconic star the white glove becomes an iconic image for the artist and is often shown in many video's and photographs of him.

The album cover and advertisement for Muse's album "The Resistance" are both the same because this gives the band an iconic image for their fans to remember and gives the band their own brand identity.

Final Digipak

This is now my digipak completed put up on the wall, I'm happy with the outcome of the digipak as I believe it suits the genre and style of song that I selected and does justice for the band itself. It's simple but it's also quite a bold statement for the band itself.

Editing for digipak

I used the font scribble scratch for the front of the cover.

Again the same font used for the inside left and images taken from the video used for a connection to the video for an iconic image.

Again images taken from the video for an iconic image or brand identity and splattered paint used again.

Same font used from the rest of the digipack and splattered paint. Feather tool used on logo's etc.

Same font used again and curved writing for cd

Digipak analysis of Coldplay - Viva La Vida

The front of the digipak is of a battle field, viva la vida's literal meaning is live the life which works along side the image suggesting the liberal feel of winning a battle, with the woman in the image holding a flag above everyone else suggesting dominance. The plain darker colours may show sadness because of the loss of people in the image but the brightness of the flag allows it to stand out again showing dominance on the battle field.

The back of the digipak shows the song listings in the middle of the cover, this is a simple background but works because of the contrast in colours of yellow and black. It's a little boring and they could have used a similar feel of the front cover to the back and the rest of the album.

The inside left of the digipak I believe does not particularly work along side the rest of the album, if they had kept an abstract feel to this part of the digipak like the front I believe it would have worked. The black and white works because of the darker colours on he cover, but I do believe they could have used better images or abstract ones of themselves perhaps. I like the use of the offset images as if they have been stuck in.

The inside right of the digipak again is quite plain and because the cd would go over the top of the text you wouldnt see it. It's simple because it brings more attention to the front cover perhaps, but I do think they could have added a little more colour or again abstract images.

Digipak analysis of Kings Of Leon - Come Around Sundown

Front of digipak - The front cover has a calm, warm, tropical feel to it with a soft yellow and red colouring. This reminds me of an evening in the summer, relaxed and fun at the same time. The palm tree also gives a foreign feel, also suggesting summer and a holiday. The font suits the image also because of again the tropical feel to the image. The way the text has been placed also works because it does not conflict with the middle of the image, the overall cover to me has a hawaiin feel.

Back of digipak - The image of the band sillouetted reminds me of a summer feel again with the sun peaking out between to of the members. The location they have used works well with the overall image of the digipak again giving a tropical feel. The placement of the text works because it does not distract you from the image.

Inside right of digipak - This image would be covered by the cd itself but I like the feel of the photo because of the relaxed feel to it, which also works because of the relaxed feel to their music itself especially from this particular album. The lighter colour of the paper itself works giving a calm feel again.

Inside left of digipak - Rather than using an photograph they have inserted a drawing or sillouette of the palm tree again in the O of KOL (kings of leon), this may have been used as a logo perhaps for the customer to remember when they buy the album. The text works because if a little darker it would almost blend into the background. Again giving a very calm feel to the overall album.

Digipak Ideas

This was my first idea for an album cover, but alot of people did not like this idea since they believed it may be too plain and boring, so instead I was going to merge this idea with idea two, which also they did not like.

The second idea was alot more vibrant but also quite simple which the majority of people went along with because of it suited the genre alot more, and also worked along side the music video because it is fun.

This was my third idea, a simple one which alot of people also liked, but I believed in the end it would do the video justice if it were so plain.

Mood Board

This was a mood board I created to influence the ideas for my digipak, I chose everything I could find which connected to the genre of alternative rock with lots of bright colours and famous alternate rock artist. Also showing the fashion involved in the genre and various words involved with the genre including powerful, non conformist, light, cutting edge, modern and adventurous.

Album Cover

Band of Skulls song "Friends" is from the album "baby darling doll face honey". The cover is very lively and bright, like the band itself. It also helps to show the lively side of my music video because of the style I have intended for it to be. I believe I may base my digipack on this style of album cover.

Points in my video

  • In my music video most of the shots throughout the song are darker shots with low key lighting which works with the song because it is about having a good time with your friends. The younger generation are used throughout the video which indicates the stereotype of younger people coming out at night to enjoy themselves because this allows them to do as they please and be rebellious with the cover of darkness.
  • A tripod has been used in some shots such as the sign holding at the beginning and end, and the time lapse of a drawing, other shots are mostly handheld and unsteady because of the home video style shots throughout the song since this is what I intended for my video to represent. I believe these shots are appropriate in the video because of the style I intended for my video to have.
  • I have used a variety of shots and shot distances including hand held, close up, mid shot, long shot, tilt and 360.
  • The shooting material I have used is appropriate because of the home video style I want for the video, the song also depicts the time we have with our friends and family and how we should enjoy this, which is why I used this particular style of shots.
  • To establish that I have promoted the band the shots that are black and white are of the band to let the audience know that this is the band in these particular shots.
