Music Video Analysis

So Far Away
is a song from the album Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold which was released in 2010. The lyrics represent the loss of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, the drummer of the band who passed away before the album was released.
The video begins with a fade which presents Matt Shadows the lead singer in Avenged Sevenfold singing the lyrics “Never feared for anything, never shamed but never free” which may represent how he feels because he never worried about losing Jimmy because he believed he would always be there in his life. At 00:02 being the leader of the group Matt is shown first to establish that he is the most well known in the group.

Matt then goes on to say “lived a life so endlessly, saw beyond what others see” which he is obviously talking about Jimmy and how he didn’t care about what anybody said and lived his life how he wanted. Their early life is shown in many shots using fade and tracking shots to show their care free childhood and how early the band was formed. The lyrics clearly link to the visuals in the video and links to the genre of metal.
As a metal band they all often wear black, band t-shirts, black jeans etc. Black is a colour that is associated with death which links to the rev’s death. Also the conventions of the genre are matched in the video.  Alot of the band members have commemorations such as tattoos or things on their instruments with something to do with Jimmy for example in the image below Synyster Gates has a tattoo on his chest saying “REV” and Johnny Christ has a guitar strap with the word “forever” on it. And in another shot Matt has a tattoo on the back of his hand which is Jimmy’s death bat logo to pay tribute for him.

The video consists of mainly the band playing or clips of their younger years, but also consists of memorable photographs and short video clips of the band over the years. These also help to commemorate the death of the rev because many of the video's consist of Jimmy making them laugh or doing unordinary things.

The facial expressions of all the band members throughout the video help the audience to understand their grief towards the loss of a great friend. This also makes the audience feel for them too.

Once Synyster gates starts to play his guitar solo that is the point where the song begins to become alot more emotional for not only the band but also the audience, since his solo's are so iconic to each song the band play. The song then comes to an end with a clip of the rev hugging his band members showing his tattoo that resembles a football shirt say "Sullivan".

  1. Good start but plenty of areas you need to look at in more detail:

Key camera shots throughout and what they're used for.
    Pace of editing
Props & Settings (& their connotations)
Is is performance, narrative or concept based (or all 3?)

Good quality but short on quantity. Currently low-mid level 3 (C-). Aim for a B at least.
