Student Music Video Analysis

I chose this video because the style of the song is similar to the genre of the song I have chosen for my music video.
During the video there is a variety of techniques used throughout where some are good, others not so good. For example the use of cctv where they appear to be breaking in for the beginning of the video works well because it works with the connotations of the genre, e.g. the song is grungy and gives the message of being rebellious and not listening to others.

The use of the clock at 0:24 works well because it connects to the lyrics in the song and the pann down to the boy waiting for someone also works with the lyrics. I then like the pan up again showing the clock over a time lapse suggesting that the boy was waiting for a long time. The camera shots used work well e.g. long shot of the boy to show himself and then the close up of his face to show his expression suggesting he is tired of waiting.

The actors wearing school uniform works again because of their unprofessional style to the song.

At 0:31 the introduction of "nora" is shown in the video, the use of zoom so the audience know who the focus in the video is on works well also. The lyrics "rocker with a nose ring" work with the shot because the girl appears to fit the conventions of the particular genre because of the makeup, hair and jewellry she is wearing.

At 0:36 the confusion of the singers facial expression works well with the lyrics because he says "i'm not quite sure what that means".

At 0:39 the green screen looks okay, obviously it works with the lyrics "the wind blows and the angels sing" but when the three girls blow a kiss it doesn't look good at all since they are all out of sync so I would have thought that who ever filmed the video would have retook the shot.

0:49 a shot of the girl with her fists raised and explosions, It works well in a strange way because of the lyrics "she's watching wrestling" because of the overly exaggerated things in wrestling.

0:50 "creaming' over tough guys" works well with the shot because someone punches another person and she gets excited about it so this also goes with the lyrics

0:52 "listening to rap metal" - the shot of her sitting and listening to music alone i like this shot because of the connection to lyrics, along with "turntables in her eyes" because of the sped up time lapse of her eyes moving round like turn tables.

Again at 0:57 i like the use of security cameras because it's as if they have broken in to the building so works with the rebellious theme of the song

1:04 "as i fail miserably trying to get the girl all the bad guys want" i think this works because of the kick me sign on his back showing that she hangs round with the wrong crowd and he's being ridiculed in front of her friends.

1:18 i don't like this shot because it is just a way of again showing the lyrics in the video rather than being a little more adventurous and doing a different shot, such as them both listening to music or at a concert.

1:32 the singer does not look professional but i believe this works because of the unprofessional feel to the whole song and the band themselves. I also like the close up shot that has been used on the singer rather than just all CCTV footage.

1:40 the use of performance rather than all narrative is good, but because they then use the same shots used at 0:52 it doesn't look very good because they obviously needed to use this footage because they ran out of footage to insert in these parts of the song.

1:48 the use of "she likes them with as mustache" being literal to the video and the boy being shocked because it just came off works because of him trying to impress her to try and be with her.

at 1:59 when she passes him a note this is not literal to the lyrics but also works with narrative because she's finally interested in him, and his reaction shows that he is happy, the tracking shot on the note is good and the use of the close up is good too

2:22 she realises he's in the same room as her and he runs away, the use of the shot in the mirror to show a point of view shot works because the audience understands the reaction to see him stood there. he then runs away dropping a note which says "i love you" which works with there relationship because he's finally admitting his feelings. The acting however is not very good in this scene.

2:37 the band messing around with half their clothes on "all i wanted was to see her naked" is literal to the lyrics and emphasizes their unprofessional side.

2:39 i love the use of the forklift to slowly lift the singer, this is also used in "in to deep" by sum 41 which are of the same genre as the band and song. this gives again a performance side to the song.

2:56 the use of the flashbacks again may be a way of reusing footage because they didn't do enough, but it works, i like the use of black and white also;.

3:07 and on wards is just the band messing around  and a final shot at 3:19 of the two main characters finally walking away into the sunset together, which is very, very cheesy, which may also work with the style of the video because it's all a happy ending after he thought he couldn't get her.

Overall the video is okay, they could have used more footage and focused more on the acting, but because of the style of the song and the genre i believe the acting used worked because there was a humorous side to the video.

  1. Some nice bits but re-read it. Things like:

I don't like that the actors are wearing their school uniforms and not a costume because I don't understand why they wouldn't have a costume instead of a costume.

    ...need changing.

Get some stills to support your bullet points, and explain at the start why you chose this video.

Name technical elements: types of shots/movements/angles, edits, mise-en-scene.
